• Can I be in Band AND other organizations at the same time?
  • Yes! -  We have several students in sports, academic programs, clubs, community organizations, all while doing Band.
  • For example, our current Drum Major is in the IB program and our Band Captain is also Soccer Captain.

• Can I participate in Murphy's Band as a Barton Academy 9th grader/MCPSS 8th grader?
  • It depends on several factors but yes, we have had these types of students before! Contact Mr. White to see if your situation qualifies you to participate.

 

• Can I only do concert band and not marching band or vice versa?
  • Not currently - classes are scheduled in a way where marching and concert bands must be taken simultaneously; however, we are willing to work with you to handle specific situations and try to make it work out where you can participate. 

 

• Is marching band hard?
  • Every sport, club, and activity has elements that are difficult; that being said, the overall goal is to progress as a musician, not be perfect. 
  • Regarding the physical component, we do light physical activity as necessary to prepare for marching, such as jogging and jumping jacks - we do not run up and down bleachers or anything like that. 

• ​What if I do not know how to read music or play an instrument?
  • We will teach you.
